Siegel is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan State University, with a courtesy appointment in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He directs the DeepTech Lab, where researchers build sensing and intelligent systems for machines, vehicles, manufacturing, and the environments around them.

Siegel trained as a mechanical engineer at MIT, earning his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees there. That background still shapes the work: the machine and the physical problem come first; sensing, computation, artificial intelligence, and control follow as needed.

His research has moved among connected vehicles, smartphone-based diagnostics, the Internet of Things, cybersecurity, robotics, acoustic intelligence, and decision support. The common thread is transition to practice: methods that can work with limited data and ordinary hardware, survive real operating conditions, and produce an answer somebody can use.

Siegel is also an inventor and entrepreneur. He has founded and led technology companies including CarKnow and DataDriven Diagnostics, contributed to international standards, advised organizations on emerging technology and digital transformation, and worked to commercialize research from the lab.

As an educator, he teaches university students, engineers, entrepreneurs, executives, and public-sector leaders. Over more than a decade, he has created and delivered more than 30 technical and professional programs, along with syndicated web content used across university and professional-education settings. He is an MIT Research Affiliate and teaches periodically with MIT Horizon.

What I mean by DeepTech

DeepTech starts with a significant problem and combines the capabilities needed to solve it: sensing, connectivity, computation, inference, actuation, control, and people who understand the context. The useful outcome matters more than the disciplinary label.

In Cultivating Invisible Impact with Deep Technology and Creative Destruction, Sriram Krishnan and I describe the destination: once-difficult technology becoming dependable, affordable, and ordinary enough to disappear into use.

A record of building

110+

publications

9+

patents

5

public datasets

Download Joshua Siegel’s curriculum vitae (PDF)

Selected recognition

Awards across teaching, research, and invention

Teaching
2026 MSU Withrow Teaching Excellence Award

2025 SAE International Educational Award Honoring Ralph R.
